Hopewell Township: still big on agriculture

NJ Secretary of Agriculture Charles Kuperus says only nine Jersey municipalities use a greater percentage of their land for agriculture than Hopewell Township

Only nine municipalities in New Jersey use a greater percentage of their land for agriculture than Hopewell Township.
That remarkable statistic was pointed out by state Secretary of Agriculture Charles Kuperus when he appeared in the township on June 5 to promote the Jersey Fresh campaign.
The occasion was the Mercer Regional Chamber of Commerce, Hopewell Chapter’s Community Appreciation Reception, during which the HVN managing editor, Ruth Luse, was honored.
The event — held at former Mayor John Hart’s farm on Titus Mill Road — also was “A Tribute to Farming and Open Space” and, in addition, focused on the work of the local Shelterwood 4-H Club.
Mr. Kuperus said the township can be proud of ranking 10th in the state in terms of intensity of agricultural use, given that the township is in densely populated Mercer County.
”It’s something we can be proud of,” said Township Committeeman Mike Markulec on Monday night.
Mr. Markulec is the committee’s liaison to the township’s Agricultural and Open Space Advisory committees.
