12th District pols explain stance on S-1962

In regard to the Hub’s recent story (July 3) about the pension and health benefits reform bill S-1962, which passed the Legislature last week, we would like to add one additional point: all of the reforms are prospective only, which means that no current teacher or government employee will be affected by those changes.

We voted for this bill because we believe it takes steps toward ending pension abuses.

It also reflects the economic realities facing the state and makes fundamental changes to the way pensions will be paid to ensure the viability of the pension system, while maintaining the promises made to current employees.

Some very important issues, such as pension tacking and padding still need to be addressed.
