Vandals damage church statues

HELMETTA – Police are investigating damage caused to statues located in front of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Main Street.

The religious statues, which are reported to be approximately 50 years old, were vandalized sometime between 9:30 p.m. July 10 and 7:30 a.m. July 11, according to Police Chief Cully Lewis. Two of the monuments were knocked over and damaged.

Despite the nature of the items vandalized, Lewis said police had no reason to believe that it was a bias crime. He noted that hanging basket plants at a residence down the road from the church were vandalized during the same timeframe.

Lewis said police are investigating the matter and asking that anyone with information contact the borough department.

A woman who answered the phone at the church said the parish did not wish to comment on the matter.
