Speeding, not sidewalks, an issue in Shrewsbury

Ihad to laugh at the mayor’s letter regarding children walking to school from Dorchester, Trafalgar, Penbrook Court, West End, Park, East End, etc. Nobody walks to school from those streets. There are parents who live on Beechwood and Garden driving their kids to school! Give us a break. We don’t need to spend money just because it’s there.

What the borough needs to address is the speeding down White Street, Garden Road and Beechwood Drive. People use these roads as a cut-through to avoid the light at Sycamore Avenue and Route 35. There have been many good suggestions from residents to slow drivers down, such as four-way stop signs, speed bumps, police on bikes (especially during school “rush” hours). I have three children who walk and ride their bikes to school. Riding a bike on the sidewalk is against the law — so they have to ride in the street. As fall approaches there will be big piles of leaves, branches, etc., in the street, forcing the children to go farther into the middle of the road.

I attended a council meeting and inquired about making Obre Place a one-way street during school hours. This would force people to drive up Sycamore to Samara to Obre Place and decrease the number of cars on White Street. The children’s safety is our top priority. The council’s unnecessary spending is up there, too.
