The Rutgers women’s basketball team (19-12) earned the No. 7 seed in the Oklahoma City Region as the NCAA Division I Women’s Tournament field was announced Monday evening. The Scarlet Knights will host No. 10 Virginia Commonweath (26-6) in first round action Saturday, as Rutgers is one of 16 host sites for the first and second round games that leads to four regional sites.

Second-seeded Auburn will face No. 15 seed Lehigh in the other Saturday contest at the RAC. The winners will meet Monday evening for the right to advance to Oklahoma City and the Sweet 16.

Tickets for the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship First/Second Round Games at the Louis Brown Athletic Center are on sale. There will be two opening-round games on Saturday, March 21 and one second round contest on Monday, March 23. Saturday’s first round doubleheader will begin at noon, while Monday’s second round game is at 7 p.m.

The Rutgers Department of IntercollegiateAthletics has three ticket packages available for the event. An Adult All-Session package allows access to all three games of the tournament for $40, while a Student All- Session package is available to anyone 18 years of age or younger and college students for $15. A “Family Four Pack” that includes four tickets to the first round doubleheader Session I on March 21 and four hot dogs and four sodas is available for $60.

Rutgers freshman Adam Bergo was named the Mid-Atlantic Region Men’s Field Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The 2009 Big East Indoor Track and Field Champion in the high jump, he is ranked third in the nation (first among the freshmen) in the event.

“I couldn’t be happier for Adam, he definitely deserves this honor,” said Rutgers head coach Mike Mulqueen. “He is a tremendous young man and an extremely hard worker. This award is a tribute to the commitment that Adam and associate head coach Kevin Kelly have put forth.”

Bergo was also recognized as the 2009 Big East Conference Most Outstanding Field Performer. At the league’s Indoor Track and Field Championships held Feb. 22 in New York City, he cleared an NCAA provisional height of 7 feet, 2 1/2 inches (2.20 meters).
