PLUMSTED — The Plumsted Business Merchants Association will host its Spring Business Expo at the New Egypt Elks Lodge, Lakewood Road (Route 528), on March 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Mayor Ron Dancer said the Township Committee is encouraging residents, especially during these difficult economic times, to support Plumsted’s business merchants and attend the business expo.
Plumsted’s newest business to open is a Wawa convenience store with 24/7 gas station service at the intersection of Route 539 and Route 528. Wawa Corp. executives have asked the Township Committee to participate in a grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 27 at 10 a.m.
In other news, Dancer said Boy Scout Nick Vadino received a certificate of recognition and accomplishment from the Township Committee for completing his Eagle Scout project at the township’s fourth and newest park. At no taxpayer expense, Nick constructed a canoe rack and picnic table at Volunteer Park on Evergreen Road, bordering Crosswicks Creek.
As a prelude to Plumsted’s observance of Earth Day on April 18 at the library, 119 Evergreen Road, local resident Terri Gilliland brought to the attention of the Township Committee the international observance of Earth Hour.
Scheduled for March 28 from 8:30-9:30 p.m., Earth Hour calls for a global statement of concern for the environment by turning off nonessential lights for one hour.
Earth Hour is sponsored by World Wildlife Fund which advocates policies to increase the use of energy from renewable sources; encouraging the implementation of energy efficient technologies; and reducing the carbon footprint, according to the mayor.
Plumsted’s Senior Outreach Search Committee is now offering transportation to senior citizen residents who need rides for medical appointments, to purchase groceries or for other necessities. Call Senior Outreach Search for more information and appointments at 609-758-4004.
The final date for Plumsted’s senior citizen free tax preparation services at the library is on March 31 from 1-5 p.m. Residents must preregister and schedule an appointment by calling toll free the Ocean County Office of Senior Services at 1-800- 668-4899.
The mobile County Connection bus will be in Plumsted on April 6 at the library, 119 Evergreen Road, from 1-3 p.m.
The County Connection provides information, assistance and services directly to people on location, rather than requiring residents to travel to the county offices in Toms River. Among the services offered are the application processing of passports; photo IDs; senior citizen and veterans services, and more.
The next regularly scheduled public meeting of the Township Committee will be April 1 at 8 p.m.
