Alternate route teacher cert. offered

For those who have a bachelor’s degree and would like to become a teacher, the Alternative Route to Teaching program offered at Ocean County College (OCC) can help them to become licensed without completing a traditional teacher-training program.

Students may choose to take the program as either a teacher certification requirement to become a teacher in New Jersey or for graduate-level credit toward a Master of Arts in teaching degree from New Jersey City University. Stage I is a 60-hour preservice program of in-class instruction with additional hours of guided classroom observations. Stage II is a 165-hour program with content-specific courses.

State I classes will meet 5-8:45 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, July 6-Aug. 12 at the OCC Main Campus, Toms River.

In order to quality for Stage I, candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in an arts and sciences field for elementary education or a major in the field for subject area license along with a certificate of eligibility and a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher for last degree earned.
