VSA arts offers programs for autistic children

VSA arts of New Jersey, New Brunswick, has announced its fall program offerings for children ages 3-21 with autism, with registration beginning Sept. 8.

Parent/child workshops in the arts for children with autism will be held 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 26 through Dec. 5, in New Brunswick. Each workshop meets for one hour per week. During the workshops in the visual and performing arts, young people will enhance their understanding and appreciation of the arts while developing skills essential for academic and personal growth.

In addition, there also will be an inclusive arts program of workshops involving peers with and without autism, for age 13 and older. Through program activities, participants will explore the arts while developing strong developmental skills and self-esteem. Mutual respect and friendship are fostered as participants discover their strengths and similarities. Parent participation is not a component of these workshops, since emphasis is placed on peer interaction and mentoring.

Registration is $30 for families whose children receive class placement in the parent/child program; there is no fee for the inclusive program. Fee waivers are available. For dates and times for the inclusive program or a registration application, call VSA at 732-745-3885, 732-745- 3913 TTY, or email [email protected].
