Booker T. Whitaker, 81, of Howell passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2009, at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center, New Brunswick, NJ. Mr. Whitaker was born in Halifax County, NC

He received his BA and Master’s Degrees in Social Work from Rutgers University. Mr. Whitaker retired from the U.S. Army in 1967 after 22 years of service. He was co-founder of Corp of the Arc and the Director of Monmouth County COPE. He was active in the State Democratic Party, the State Labor Relations Board and the Monmouth Counties Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO.

He was the Director of Special Offenders Program for ARC of Middlesex County, Raritan Valley Division, for 20 years retiring in 2006.

He was predeceased by his wife, Fannie I., in 1982 and a daughter, Katrina R., in 1994. He is survived by a sister, O’Dessa Whitaker Sumpter of Beachwood, Ohio; several nieces and nephews including Gregory Walker, Lydia-Margaret Thornton and Lawrence Sumpter and a host of relatives and friends.

Visiting at the Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), Freehold Twp., NJ, on Saturday, September 12, 2009, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM with his memorial service starting at 4:00 PM.
