MONTGOMERY: Police targeting traffic checkpoints

By Kristine Snodgrass, Staff Writer
MONTGOMERY — Police were on the lookout for expired vehicle inspection stickers during a checkpoint Monday at the intersection of routes 206 and 518.
The checkpoint, which was operated from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., was in conjunction with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission Mobile Inspection Team, police said. One was conducted last month, and three more monthly checkpoints are planned for this year.
A checkpoint Aug. 31 resulted in 59 tickets being issued and one arrest, police said. Out of those 59 summonses, 30 were inspection-related, 11 were for failure to wear seat belts, seven were for improper cell phone use, two were other moving violations, and the remaining were equipment and documentation issues, police said.
Officers focus on vehicle inspection issues, but drivers can be stopped for all visible motor vehicle infractions, police said.
If their inspection is not valid, drivers may be issued a summons and forwarded to the team of state inspectors, who run the vehicle through a battery of tests.
Other offenders are issued summonses and, depending on the violation, continue on their way, police said.
The remaining checkpoints are scheduled for Oct. 19, Nov. 23 and Dec. 7.
