Senior center will get upgrades

MARLBORO — Improved parking and upgrades to the Morganville Senior Center, Texas Road, will soon be under way after Marlboro was awarded a grant that will cover the cost of the work.

The municipality was awarded $80,152 through a Community Development Block Grant.

The senior center was dormant for several years, but when Mayor Jonathan Hornik took office in January 2008 he supported the building’s reopening. The Morganville Senior Center was officially reopened in June 2008.

Prior to reopening, the senior center received a fresh coat of paint and a donation of furniture from Applewood Estates of Freehold Township, a division of CentraState Healthcare System.

However, there were still other improvements that needed to be completed.

With the $80,152 grant, the Morganville Senior Center will have its parking area reconfigured to accommodate more cars, a new fence installed, original kitchen equipment replaced and repairs made to floor cracks. The senior center will also receive security equipment.

Hornik said with the expected new kitchen appliances, programming for Marlboro’s seniors may include cooking classes, since the facility will be able to accommodate additional individuals.
