CHRIS KELLY staff Edison Township recently received a grant of over $300,000 from the state Department of Transportation to fund a reconstruction project of Feather Bed Lane. According to township engineer John Medina, the much-traveled stretch of road located on the north side of town close to the Union County border has often been a problem due to its sight obstructions and sharp curves.

“This reconstruction project is absolutely necessary,” Medina said. “When the weather is rainy and foggy in that area, it becomes very difficult to drive. It gets to a point where handling becomes a huge problem.”

The roadway will be widened to make it easier for the approximately 6,000 drivers who use it each day. The project will also include the repair of sidewalks.

“The curbs will be super-elevated, which will actually make things easier for pedestrians,” Medina said. “The sidewalks will also be taken care of.”

Medina also mentioned that the $301,132 grant will be incorporated into the capital budget and that construction on the project would probably start late next year.
