MONTGOMERY: Cougar teams reach holiday tourney finals

PDS girls reach Moorestown title game

   Both Montgomery High School basketball teams reached the championship games of their holiday tournaments, while the Princeton Day School girls reached the final at the Moorestown Tournament. All three were scheduled to play Wednesday after Packet deadline.
   The Montgomery boys advanced to the championship game of the Jack Reilly Tournament in Fort Lee with a 40-26 win over Wayne Hills on Monday. Christian Benz led the Cougars with 18 points and James Loupos added 14 in the win over Wayne Hills as Montgomery improved to 4-0. Ryan McCoy had 21 points and Matt Mignon added 20 in a 73-49 tournament-opening win over Fort Lee on Saturday.
   The West Windsor-Plainsboro North boys defeated Florence, 50-37, in the consolation game of the J. Michael Tucker Memorial Tournament at Bordentown on Tuesday. Eli Can had 14 points and Will Whipple added 11 as the Knights improved to 3-1. The Knights fell into the consolation game with a 74-47 loss to Haddonfield despite 25 points from Ethan Harel.
   The Princeton High School boys lost a pair of games at the ESCIT at Trenton Catholic Academy. Skye Ettin had eight points in a 48-37 loss to Prep Charter on Monday. Ettin and Eric Shorter had 12 points apiece in a 58-48 loss to Notre Dame in Saturday’s tournament opener. PHS led by two at halftime, but shot just 7 of 22 from the free-throw line in the second half against the Irish.
   West Windsor-Plainsboro South dropped both of its games in the Boardwalk Basketball Classic in Wildwood. Jack Dennehy had 10 points and 12 rebounds in a 48-32 loss to Lower Cape May on Monday. Dennehy had a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds in a 63-50 tournament-opening loss to Absegami on Sunday. The Pirates are 1-3.
   The PDS boys lost, 71-35, to host Hillsborough in the Hillsborough Holiday Tournament on Tuesday despite 14 points from Kenny Holzhammer. They fell to 1-5 with the loss and were scheduled to play a consolation game Wednesday against Woodbridge.
   The Montgomery girls advanced to the championship game against North Hunterdon in their own Cougar Classic with a 41-32 win over South Plainfield on Monday. Carlee Rosenthal had 16 points in the win and Julie Smith and Ashanti Bess contributed nine points apiece as the Cougars improved to 2-1.
   The Princeton girls opened the John Molinelli Tournament at Hopewell Valley with a 41-35 loss to the host Bulldogs on Tuesday night. Molly Barber had 18 points and Julie Barry added 12 points for the Little Tigers. They were scheduled to play a consolation game against Lawrence on Wednesday.
   The WW-P North girls lost the consolation game of the Steve Wiener Memorial Tournament, 52-48, to Nottingham on Tuesday. Jacquie Klotz had 17 points for the Knights in the loss. The Knights dropped into the consolation game with a 48-28 loss to South Brunswick on Monday. Denise Pyfrom had nine points to lead the Knights, who fell to 2-2.
   The PDS girls beat Moorestown, 63-32, in the host’s tournament on Tuesday to advance to Wednesday’s championship game. Janie Smukler and Sarah Godwin had 18 points and five assists apiece and Tiffany Patterson had 17 points.
   The WW-P South girls lost, 56-47, to host Hillsborough in the Hillsborough Holiday Tournament on Tuesday. Eric Simi led the Pirates with 20 points. The Pirates were scheduled to play Steinert on Wednesday.
