Spring break brings theme park opening

Six Flags Great Adventure, Route 537, Jackson, will kick off the 2010 season on March 27 with its two-week-long spring break presented by Stride Gum. Opening day will launch the Stride-A-Thon as 30 riders compete to be the last rider on the seven looping, floorless coaster Bizarro in this eight-hour ride-a-thon.

Through a contest hosted on Six Flags Great Adventure’s Facebook page and a local radio station, 30 riders will be selected to experience the eight-hour ride on Bizarro.

Standing at 142 feet tall and flying at a speed of 61 mph, this 3.5-minute thrill ride features seven loops, including 114-foot vertical and 96-foot dive loops. The lone rider will receive a VIP tour for four to Six Flags Great Adventure, which includes a personal tour guide, front-of-the-line access, complimentary meals and much more.

Six Flags Great Adventure offers family entertainment with 13 roller coasters, four children’s areas, interactive animal shows and concerts. The headline concert will be the Bamboozle Roadshow featuring top acts like Boys Like Girls, All Time Low, Third Eye Blind, LMFAO, Forever the Sickest Kids, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan and more.

Season highlights for 2010 will include Saturday Night Lights Fireworks beginning July 4 and running Saturdays July 10 through Aug. 21. This year’s theme “Rock Loves” produced by Pyrtecnico will feature decades of popular rock music with a special nod to New Jersey favorites.

The Glow in the Park parade will launch Memorial Day weekend with drummers, puppeteers, singers, dancers and kinetic stilt walkers creating a nighttime spectacular, produced by Gary Goddard Entertainment Group.

Dolphin Discovery will debut a new show in 2010 when the bottlenose dolphins and the Dolphin Discovery Team Green trainers face off with careless litterbugs that includes a band of mischievous California sea lions.

Guests can also enjoy watching the Looney Tunes Dance Off, a dance competition between Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tweety and their Looney Tunes pals, in addition to visiting the Temple of the Tiger where they can take a close look at Bengal tigers and learn the importance of conservation to preserve this endangered species.

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, Six Flags Hurricane Harbor will offer guests the ultimate in tubing thrills with the launch of an enormous funnel-shaped water attraction — The Tornado. The water attraction will resemble a massive household funnel turned on its side that will blast thrill seekers down a 135-foot vortex tunnel and into the 60-footwide funnel and then into a calm catch pool. The Tornado will touch down May 29.
