Participants sought for conservation unit

Applications are being accepted for the Middlesex County Youth Conservation Corps, whose mission is “to protect and preserve natural areas from misuse, polluters and the forces of nature” at the more than 7,000 acres of open space owned and maintained by Middlesex County.

Conservation Corps crew members earn $8.50 per hour and will work 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, June 21-Aug. 13. Work will take place primarily at county open-space sites in Old Bridge, Monroe and South Brunswick. Students age 16 and above are encouraged to apply.

Activities will include trail building, litter cleanup, invasive-species removal and wildlife-habitat improvements. Applicants should be enthusiastic, self-motivated, willing to work and learn as part of a team. Additional qualifications include the capacity to walk several miles and stand for extended periods of time, a willingness to get dirty and work outdoors in varying weather conditions, and the ability to use a variety of hand tools.
