Town, school board will discuss budget

PLUMSTED — The Plumsted Township Committee and the Plumsted Board of Education will meet together at the same time and have two public meetings to consider the fate of the 2010-11 school budget.

On April 20, voters rejected the tax levy that was proposed by the school board to support the operation of Plumsted’s schools in the upcoming academic year.

The Township Committee is reviewing the board’s proposed budget and must certify a tax levy for the 2010-11 school year by May 19.

The first combined public meeting with the committee and the school board is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 13 at the New Egypt High School auditorium.

Although there will be no official action taken at the May 13 meeting, the public will be given a status report of informal discussions between a Township Committee and school board subcommittee that is composed of two members from the committee and the school board.

In addition to the status report, the township and the school board will seek public comment and suggestions in preparation for the final public meeting, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 18 at the high school auditorium.

State law requires a final determination to be made by the Township Committee on the school tax levy by May 19.

The public is advised that a recess, one or more times, may be necessary at the May 18 meeting to consider additional comments from members of the school board, Township Committee and public in order to prepare or revise final determinations.
