Patriots edge Rebels to win A North gymnastics title

For a second straight year, the Freehold Township High School gymnastics team has won the Shore Conference A North Division championship.

In a duel between undefeated teams, the Patriots topped Howell High School, 105.3 to 103.95, to capture the division title on Oct. 7 in Freehold Township.

“The Howell meet was the first meet where all four of our top girls went allaround,” Freehold Township coach James St. Angelo said.

Nicole Freitas, Elise Janczewski, Kait Reszkowski and Samantha Gormley proved to be too much for Howell’s gymnasts to overcome.

Reszkowski placed first on the floor exercise with a score of 9.4, followed by Freitas (9.35) and Janczewski (9.2).

Janczewski tied for first on the vault with Howell’s Monet Masters with a score of 9.25, and Gormley came through with a score of 9.2 for the Patriots in third place.

Freitas placed first on the balance beam with a score of 9.05, with Reszkowski in second place with a score of 8.85.

Howell’s Kristin Murray placed first on the uneven bars with a score of 8.35, ahead of her teammate Bayleigh Fobes and Reszkowski, who each scored 8.3.

Reszkowski, who was making her allaround debut, beat Fobes 35.05 to 35.00. Freitas was third in the all-around with a score of 34.8.

Freehold Township (9-0) and Howell (8-1) will turn their attention to the Shore Conference Championships to be held at Brick Memorial High School in Brick Township on Oct. 30. The Patriots and the Rebels will be serious contenders for the team title.

Last year, after losing A North to the Patriots, the Rebels bounced back and won the Shore Conference team title.
