Guests welcome at MacKenzie Museum

HOWELL — The MacKenzie Museum, 427 Lakewood-Farmingdale Road, Howell, will host an open house 1-4 p.m. Dec. 18.

The museum is traditionally decorated for Christmas as the MacKenzie home may have been decorated in the early 1800s.

Lynne Gillette of the Howell Historical Society said the open house allows guests to walk around and see how beautifully the house is decorated for the holidays and to get a feel for how life was in the 1800s.

The home was built circa 1805, and an addition to the front of the home was constructed circa 1855. Visitors will be able to view antique tools, an outhouse, a horse shed and a dipping well behind the home.

“The museum gives visitors a chance to see how life would have been back then without the modern conveniences we have today,” Gillette said.

Some of the museum’s recent visitors included the members of a Tiger Cub troop who were working on their Family Life badges. The museum gave the children a chance to see what kind of chores youngsters were doing in that time period and a feel for what family life was like in the 19th century, Gillette said.

People of all ages are welcome to visit the museum. Details: 732-938-2212.
