School event helps Toys for Tots

HOWELL — An annual ice cream social for first-graders at the Adelphia School was held on Dec. 10. Donations were accepted during the event to assist Toys for Tots this holiday season.

Danielle Hill, one of the coordinators of the event and a member of the Adelphia School PTA, said the ice cream social is something the children look forward to.

“The event really brings the class together,” Hill said, adding that the ice cream social gives the first-graders a chance to see one another outside of the classroom and to give something back to the community.

The gathering had a DJ, games for the children to play, crafts for them to create and, of course, ice cream, Hill said.

Instead of charging a fee for the evening, each family was asked to bring a new unwrapped toy with them, to be donated to Toys For Tots.

Every year, Hill said, pupils at each grade level host a night out event sponsored by the PTA in which they are given the opportunity to assist a specific organization.

Throughout the years the ice cream socials have been able to donate to organizations such as the Ronald McDonald House, Hats Off for Cancer, the Monmouth County SPCA and Children’s Specialized Hospital.

One year the pupils created Christmas cards and sent them to American servicemen and servicewomen who were stationed overseas, Hill said.
