Initiative aimed at helping environment, saving money

Edison officials are implementing changes in the municipal court and Recreation Department with the aim of entering the green scene beginning on March 1.

Mayor Antonia Ricigliano announced that since almost 4 billion trees worldwide are cut down for paper each year, one of the major changes occurring in the township will involve the use of less paper. This will provide significant cost savings as well as environmental savings, because the fliers for all of the township’s programs, trips and special events will now be offered through the its website, www.edisonnj.org.

Ricigliano said this will allow residents easy access to download all applications from their computers. Pictures and information from recent programs, trips and special events will also be available on the website.

“This is long overdue, and I am excited for the opportunity for our department to go green,” said Recreation Director Denise Halliwell. “We normally print hundreds of thousands of fliers a year. This will save tremendously on paper, ink and the cost of staff needed to distribute our information through the schools.” The new quarterly online newsletter, “Entertaining Edison,” will highlight youth league information, programs for youths and adults, upcoming special events, trips and other items. The first edition, covering March, April and May, will hit the Internet on March 1.

“This is going to be a great way for our residents and anyone else to see what’s happening in Edison,” Halliwell said. “We are very proud of what our township and, specifically, our department does year-round.” “The implementation of this economic and environmental initiative is beneficial to the residents of Edison Township,” Ricigliano said. “Information is accessible in a timely yet cost-effective manner. We are very pleased to join with communities across the country in the ‘go green’ movement.”

For those without access to a computer, applications will be available at the Stelton and Minnie B. Veal community centers, and information on all events can be obtained by calling the Recreation Department at 732-248-7310.
