Burlington County Sheriff Jean Stanfield said openings are still available for the first of two planned Youth Police Academies this spring. The academy is free of charge and opened to youngsters ages 7 to 12.
The classes will be held on three consecutive Saturdays, March 5, March 12 and March 19, from 9 a.m. to Noon at the County’s Human Services Facility, Woodlane Road, Westampton.
"This is an exciting opportunity for children to get a close up look at police work and also learn how they can protect themselves," said Ms. Stanfield. "Those familiar with this program agree that these are Saturday mornings well spent."
She said the courses will include a canine demonstration as well as a demonstration by a tactical SWAT team. The youngsters will also learn about gun safety, fire safety, bike safety, the dangers of gang involvement, and how to avoid abduction.
Students will also learn marching and drilling, and have a graduation ceremony with T-shirt and certificate.
To register, visit the county website at www.co.burlington.nj.us and click on the Sheriff’s Department in the left column, and then the Community Services Unit for the Youth Police Academy link. A registration form can then be printed out.
Those seeking more information should call (609) 265-3788.
Ms. Stanfield said the second academy will be held on the first three Saturdays in May.
