Dr. L. Glenn Barkalow

Dr. Barkalow, 85 of Freehold, died March 9, 2011, at home. He was born on a farm in the Adelphia section of Howell and moved to Freehold, where he attended Freehold High School. He graduated from Princeton University in the Navy’s V12 program, went to medical school at Long Island College of Medicine and had postgraduate training at Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. He fulfilled his military commitment with two years of service at Burtonwood Air Force Base near Warrington, England. He returned to Freehold and practiced as an internist for the next 41 years. He was one of the founding physicians of Freehold Area Hospital, now known as CentraState Medical Center, where he served as chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine for 18 years. He also served as chief of staff. During this time, he was also president of the Medical Society of Monmouth County and president of the Central Jersey Heart Association. Dr. Barkalow retired from medicine in 1996. Surviving are his wife of over 62 years, Winifred M. Barkalow; five children, Derek Barkalow of DeLeon Springs, Fla., Glenda Grimes of Rosemont, Susan Lambeth of Ipswich, Mass., David Barkalow of Deerfield, Ill., and Kurt Barkalow of Wakefield, Mass.; and 10 grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church, Freehold, followed by interment at Adelphia Cemetery, Adelphia.
