To the editor:
On April 27 the people of Montgomery Township will have the chance to add some new faces with new ideas to the Board of Education at a time when those ideas are sorely needed. Christine Abrahams should be one of those elected.
My wife, Ellen, and I have two sons in the district. One is in the Upper Middle School now and the other is in Lower Middle School. They have passed through every school from Kid Connection on up and we have been generally pleased with the education they have received. They have been taught by some very fine teachers, who were dedicated to the students, knew their craft and were inspiring.
We have been very involved with the schools throughout the years. Ellen has always been a class mom and has run so many class parties, Field Days, Fun Days and trips we can’t even count them. I have volunteered my time for video production and chaperoned my share of dances.
I am a product of the school system, a member of Montgomery High School Class of 1979 having passed through the schools then in the district. (I share that distinction with Christine’s husband Bruce.)
The point is, we have a vested interest in education in Montgomery Township and that is why we are voting for Christine Abrahams. Christine will bring a wealth of knowledge about teaching and learning to the board. She was a successful teacher in a far more challenging school system (New York City) than ours. She worked in the private sector at Merrill Lynch, in their marketing department even there she spearheaded the company’s diversity training. She is now an administrator with the Hopewell Valley School District. Christine has also been a life-long student. She has two master’s degrees, and a doctorate. She is thrilled to be around education. And she is good at it. That is why Ellen and I will be voting for Christine Abrahams she likes education and she is good at it.
Christine understands that Montgomery needs to deliver quality education with sound fiscal responsibility. She knows that the links between the community, the school, the parent and the child are the most important factors in good education. She wants to find new ways to keep the communication lines open, but she also wants to strengthen the traditional paths. And she understands that education is a face to face, person to person interaction, and that people make the difference.
The challenges that face Montgomery schools are difficult, but they are not insurmountable. We have excellent schools and we have excellent educators. What we need now is to fill the open seats on the Board of Education with more excellent people. To do that Ellen and I hope you will join us on April 27 in voting for Christine Abrahams.
