Serious attention must be paid to pollution at NJ shore

Summer beach season has officially kicked off and like many New Jersey residents, I will spend my weekends at the shore anywhere from Sandy Hook to Island Heights.

Unfortunately, reckless development of Barnegat Bay and the shore is threatening the waters where we swim and fish due to chemical pollution from overstressed storm basins, making the bay one of the most threatened coastal waters in the nation.

Gov. Chris Christie has said that cleaning up water pollution at Barnegat Bay and the shore is a priority — but mandatory pollution limits must be set for the bay by the end of the summer.

Without immediate protection, the state’s other coastal waters are bound to follow in Barnegat Bay’s troubled footsteps.
