Master Gardeners honor two students

The Master Gardeners of Ocean County has announced the winners of its 2011 scholarships. Each recipient will receive $1,000 toward his future education.

The recipients are Kevin Dillon, a graduate of Jackson Memorial High School and a student at the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES), Manahawkin, and Kyle Shankle, a graduate of Jackson Memorial High School who attended MATES in his freshman and sophomore years.

Kevin’s goal is to be a biologist with concentrations in ecology and the environment. His future plans are to attain his doctorate at Rutgers University.

Kyle’s interests are more in the area of botany and he will be attending Florida State University. His first semester training will be in Panama City, Panama, studying the rain forests, and then London to hopefully work at Kew Gardens.

The Master Gardeners of Ocean County, as part of their service to the community, present these annual awards to students who will enter or continue a course of study in horticulture or environmental science.
