The following programs are offered in the Monroe Township Senior Center in the Municipal Building on Perrineville Road.
The name has changed officially to the Monroe Township Office of Senior Services with the Senior Center housing activities and special events.
Effective Sept. 1, there are no more walk-ins.
It is necessary to eliminate the walk-in option as a result of its complications. Admission will be denied for those who do not register in advance for special monthly programs.
Call to register in advance for activities. If a program is filled to capacity and is closed, call back a day or two prior to a desired program date to see if there are any openings available.
Information about these programs is featured in the monthly newsletter, “Senior Focus,” which is distributed around the 15th of the previous month, as well as the township website www.monroetwp.com.
Individuals who are 55 years of age and older, reside in Monroe Township and are registered with the office are eligible to participate in these activities.

Gotta Wii: Get Your Game On: Explore the virtual world of bowling and tennis. Bring in a friend and Wii by appointment Sept. 28 and 30.
September movies: Select days of the month, see a movie at the Senior Center. “Limitless” will be shown Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 1:30 p.m. This mystery/fantasy stars Bradley Cooper; PG-13. “The Adjustment Bureau will be seen Thursday, Sept. 29, at 1:30 p.m. This science fiction/romance stars Matt Damon; PG-13.) Register for each movie separately.
Cash raffle: sponsored by the Friends of the Senior Center Inc. to generate funds for the new Senior Center. Each ticket costs $2. A book of 10 tickets is $20. Winners will be announced Tuesday, Jan. 12, during the special New Year’s gala; they need not be present to win. Show your support and purchase a ticket or two. Respite care and Pokeno: Try It. You May Like It: Monday, Sept. 26, at 1:30 p.m., Carole Cieless, outreach marketing from Acorn Glen Assisted Living, will define the term “respite” and explore opportunities for respite stays. Then have a game of Pokeno with prizes.
Mini massage: Tuesday, Sept. 27, by appointment only. This month, have a free 10-minute chair massage with A Healing Touch massage therapist. Appointment times are limited.
New building equals new building fund: The Friends of the Senior Center Inc. is sponsoring an array of fundraising projects to support the needs of the new Senior Center.
Raffle tickets and books are available for purchase at the Senior Center. Tickets are $2 each. Books are $20 each.
Winners need not be present Tuesday, Jan. 10, during the Friends’ New Year’s Gala to be eligible to receive cash prizes.
Besides the raffle, there will be a dedication wall in the new building created with donor bricks that are available to order now. Two different size bricks are offered, starting at $50 each.

Silver Screen Nostalgia: Sid Caesar: Thursday, Oct. 3, at 1:30 p.m., hail the comedy of Sid Caesar and friends as Bill Levy examines Caesar’s “Your Show of Shows” and “Caesar’s Hour.” This program also looks at the contributing writers such as Mel Brooks, Neil Simon and Woody Allen as well as the actors, including Imogene Coca, Carl Reiner and Nanette Fabray.
Mah Jongg for Beginners: Starting Tuesday, Oct. 4, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., join Roz Blinder for a four-session course for beginners (Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25). The course fee is $5, which is due upon registering in-person. Space is limited. Handouts and rules will be available from the instructor or students may purchase a card from the Mah Jongg League.
Klezmer Music Comes to America: Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 1:30 p.m., join David Aaron for an afternoon with Klezmer and Yiddish music and singing.
Take It To Heart: Carotid Artery Disease: Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m., Dr. P. Haser from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital will discuss the importance of carotid disease diagnosis, monitoring and treating as well as how to reduce risk of a stroke.
Judge for Yourself: Thursday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m., join Judge Jenn’s court to discuss and debate true, sometimes controversial stories and cases. Space is limited.
Now That’s Italian: Tuesday, Oct. 11, join the Friends of the Senior Center Inc. for an afternoon at the “Now, That’s Italian” luncheon complete with pizza, Italian desserts and a DVD presentation of “The Best of the Dean Martin Show.” Tickets are $8. Register in-person at the Senior Center.
Watercolor Studio: Starting Wednesday, Oct. 12, from 1 to 3 p.m., join Clare Godleski, artist and teacher, for this watercolor class that meets Oct. 12, 19 and 26, Nov. 2 and 30 and Dec. 7, 14 and 21. Breaks in the schedule enable students to do homework for class. Space is limited. The course fee is $80, due upon registering in-person. Make check payable to “The Friends of the Senior Center Inc. Love the Skin You’re In: Thursday, Oct. 13, at 1:30 p.m., Dr. Kathleen M. Rossy, board-certified dermatologist, will discuss the latest information on how to keep skin radiant and healthy from antioxidants and skin repair to skin concerns and sun protection.
Smile, You’re On Candid Camera: Friday, Oct. 14, at 10:30 a.m., enjoy the greatest moments of catching people off guard and being themselves. Watch classic sequences from “Candid Camera,” America’s longest-running entertainment series, during this two-hour DVD presentation.
Laugh Out Loud: Friday, Oct. 14 at 1:30 p.m., join Yvette Halpin as she plans for an afternoon of fall fun. What she has in store is a mystery, but laughter and a good time are always on the menu with an autumn twist.
World War II in Hollywood: Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m., Michael Kownacky and Ted Otten from WWFM’s The Classical Network examine how the war effort was depicted in Hollywood. From “This is the Army” to “Meet Me in St. Louis,” film musicals either dealt directly with the war or were created for escapism and as a reminder of home. To attend, tickets are available for $5. Proceeds will benefit the annual toy drive. Space is limited.
Assisted living options and bingo: Thursday, Oct. 20, at 1:30 p.m., Carole Cieless, outreach marketing, Acorn Glen Assisted Living, will provide an overview of assisted living and explores housing options. Immediately following, play bingo with plenty of prizes.
Healthy holiday eating cooking demo: Friday, Oct. 21, at 1:30 p.m., Georgia Saler, registered dietitian, lifestyle educator, from PineBrook Care Center, will offer a healthy holiday eating lecture complete with taste testing and nutritional information. Space is limited.
Art of the Masters: Wassily Kandinsky: Friday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m., after the brief lecture on the life and work of Russian painter Kandinsky, 16 participants will work in the artist’s style to create a personal masterpiece in tempura paint.. To participate in the project, register in person and obtain a coupon while supplies last.
Spun cotton ornaments: Halloween theme: Monday, Oct. 24, at 1:30 p.m., join Clare Godleski, artist and teacher as she introduces art making, Victorian-style, during this two-day class (Oct. 24 and 31). A brief history lesson will be followed by creating a Halloween-inspired ornament. Registration is required, in person, by Oct. 17, while openings last. Space is limited. The course fee is $20, which includes instruction and materials. Additional supplies are subsidized by the Friends of the Senior Center Inc.

Flavian’s Mind Power Show: Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 1:30 p.m., Flavian and his magical mental abilities are presented in his mind-reading game show. This year, one audience member will have the chance to win $100. There also will be refreshments. Tickets are $2, due upon registering in person.
Music and Dance: A Monster of a Bash: Thursday, Oct. 27, at 2 p.m., Jerry Castaldo, entertainer, will sing and schmooze. There will be assorted desserts. Tickets are $2, due upon registering in person. Space is limited. Halloween costumes can be worn for the contest.
Chime Choir: Friday, Oct. 28, 1:30 p.m., hear the sounds of chimes during the Rossmoor Community Church’s Chime Choir performance. Space is limited.
