Democrats sweep in Edison

Democrats will continue to hold all the reins in Edison government.

The party’s ticket swept in the Nov. 8 election, when five of the Township Council’s seven seats were up for grabs.

Incumbents Dr. Sudhanshu Prasad, Wayne Mascola and Robert Karabinchak won re-election to four-year terms on the council, while newcomer Michael R. Lombardi was also selected to serve a full term. Lombardi will take over for Melissa Perilstein, who did not seek re-election.

Karabinchak garnered the most votes with 6,054. Newcomer Lombardi received 6,035 votes; Mascola, 5,847; and Prasad, 5,733. Republican candidate Mary Lou Resner fell short with 4,545 votes, as did running mates Lisa Goldhamer, with 4,299; Abrar Kahn, 4,286; and Zhiyu Hu, 4,161.

Incumbent Democrat Alvaro Gomez, who was appointed to the council in January after longtime Councilman Charles Tomaro resigned to become a Middlesex County freeholder, garnered 5,757 votes to win a two-year unexpired term on the council. His opponent, Republican Thomas Hughes, received 4,468 votes.

The council is rounded out by Democrats Robert Diehl, who is its current president, and Thomas Lankey. Mayor Antonia Ricigliano is also a Democrat.

According to Township Clerk Reina Murphy, 11,429 of the township’s 51,787 registered voters cast ballots in the election.
