LeGrand, of theAvenel section of Woodbridge, had played football for the Colonia Patriots at Colonia High School and also for the Port Reading Saints Pop Warner team. As a junior at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, he most recently was a defensive tackle for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. But on Oct. 16, 2010, he sustained life-altering injuries while making a tackle during a game against the Army Black Knights — the name of the U.S. MilitaryAcademy at West Point’s athletic teams — at the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford.
