Artwork of local pupil makes cover

JACKSON — The artwork of Maura Cummings, a third grade pupil at Saint Aloysius School, Jackson, was recently published on the front cover of Pediatrics in Review, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The journal offers a cover art contest each year for artists between 5 and 16 years of age. Twelve students are selected and a new work of art is featured each month, according to a press release.

Maura’s winning art appeared on the front cover of the journal’s October issue.

When Maura, who entered the contest in 2011 at the age of 6, was asked what inspired her to create her drawing, she said, “I wanted to draw an outside scene, so I drew a picture of blue skies and a castle. I was happy when I won because it was nice to see my art on the cover.”

Saint Aloysius School art teacher Toni McEwan encourages all of the pupils to find their inner artist and has enabled her pupils to create many great works of art including rhythmic lines, abstract foil reliefs and zentangles, according to the press release.
