Dept. announces retirement of two veteran officers

EAST BRUNSWICK — The East Brunswick Police Department (EBPD) announced a new hire while recognizing the contributions made by two retiring officers.

Patrolman Justin Schlusselfeld was sworn in during a ceremony held Feb. 6 at the municipal complex.

Schlusselfeld, 24, an East Brunswick native, will be assigned to the patrol section upon completing field training.

East Brunswick’s newest officer holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, New York City.

According to a press release from the township, Schlusselfeld completed his basic training at the Newark Police Academy and previously served with the Newark and Milltown police departments.

Meanwhile, two department veterans — Detective Edward Conlon and Patrolman Anthony Giordano — have retired, effective Feb. 1.

Conlon was hired by the department in August 1987 and spent more than 25 years serving East Brunswick, first as a patrolman in the operations division and with the Project 18 community policing unit. In 1998, Conlon became a detective, serving in the juvenile and investigative divisions.

Like Conlon, Giordano spent significant time with the police department, having been hired in December 1987. Giordano served as a patrolman in the operations division and special operations unit.

According to Detective Sgt. Kevin Zebro, the department’s manpower currently stands at 81.

“Another officer is expected to be hired in the near future to bring us up to 82, where we have been for the last few years,” Zebro said.
