February 24, 2013, Princeton, New Jersey Webster Gadbois of Princeton High School has been awarded the Grand Prize for Music Composition at the NJMEA Conference, sponsored by the New Jersey Music Educators Association.
Webster was interviewed at the New Jersey Music Educators Conference on Saturday, March 23 by Patrick Burns , a notable composer and Adjunct Professor of Music at Montclair University. Mr. Burns provided a fresh perspective on Webster’s work as well as the works of the other five finalists. Perhaps the most compelling conversation involved the projection of the future of classical music, which may involve combining genres & composing for unusual ensembles (Webster effectively incorporated a jazz section in Arcus, which he composed for string quartet with clarinet & flute.) It was a lively and enlightening interview and it will be available for viewing on the NJMEA website within a few weeks.
Webster was sponsored by Robert Loughran of Princeton High School, who is the musical director of the Princeton High School Orchestra. Webb is taking an independent study course with Mr. Loughran and has been appointed the "Composer-in-Residence" of the Princeton High School Orchestra for 2012/2013. Webb also attends the Juilliard Pre-College program in Manhattan, and recently relocated from Seattle because of the higher level of music education available to him on the East Coast.
