Fire destroys public works storage site

Firefighters tackle fire twice throughout the day

EDISON — A blaze destroyed a storage building at the township’s Department of Public Works facility on March 18, according to Chief Brian Latham of the Edison Fire Department.

The 9:26 a.m. call came in from the main garage on the public works property at 745 New Durham Road. By the time firefighters arrived, the building was engulfed. Five Edison engine companies responded, and it took a total of 30 firefighters approximately two hours to get the blaze under control. There were no injuries.

The flames later reignited in the salt house, which contains the road salt used during inclement weather, Latham said.

The fire destroyed the building. The monetary value of everything lost has yet to be determined.

While the cause of the fire was still unknown as of Monday, Latham said investigators do not suspect foul play.
