A contractor hit a natural gas pipeline at about 10:50 a.m. Wednesday, shutting down the corner of Duke’s Parkway and South Main Street in Manville.
Main Street was closed, but two lanes are expected to open by 3:30 p.m., said Ken Otrimski, director of Manville’s Office of Emergency Management.
The Walmart shopping center and Reading Cinemas were evacuated as a precaution.
According to Mr. Otrimski, a contractor hit the four-inch pipe while digging a trench to install a left-hand turn traffic light.
PSE&G received a call from the Manville police department at 11 a.m.
The Manville police and fire departments and the Office of Emergency Management personnel were called to the scene.
