Officer was working ‘Cops in Shops’ detail
A 20-year-old Hillsborough man was charged May 25 with a township summons for underage possession of alcohol by Hillsborough police working a special detail.
Plain-clothes officers assigned to the Cops in Shops program said they saw township resident Brian Valverde come out of the Shoppers’ Liquor store at 390 Route 206 at 8:49 p.m.
He was given a summons and released pending a municipal court date.
The Cops in Shops program is funded by a state grant through the N.J. Division of Alcohol Beverage Control. Officers are placed in or near liquor stores, or may pose as a store employee. They monitor the sale of alcohol to minors and make arrests, when necessary. Store owners are also educated on how to properly check Ids and recognize fake ones.
