MONTGOMERY — A local man was flown to a burn center in Essex County after burning both legs Friday morning when removing a car that had caught fire inside his garage on Pear Tree Drive.
Joshua Turner, 50, started a 1976 Volkswagen Beetle convertible “when the engine caught fire,” police said in a news release. He along with his son and a neighbor were able to get the vehicle out “to prevent the fire from spreading,” police said.
Mr. Turner was burned when fuel on the ground ignited, said police.
Treated at the scene, he needed to be flown by helicopter to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, police said. Police said the injuries were not considered life threatening, although he was listed in critical condition as of Friday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
The fire was extinguished, police said. No one else was injured.
