WEST WINDSOR — A Lawrenceville man was charged with drunk driving after driving his car into Mercer Lake around midnight on Tuesday, police said.
James Page Jr., 24, was driving down South Post Road that night when he became lost, hit a wooden pylon barrier and instead of braking, drove his 2001 Mercury into Mercer Lake at 11:54 p.m., according to the police report.
Mr. Page got out of the car and walked to a nearby neighborhood, where police found him trying to flag down passing vehicles. The responding officers said he initially told them there was a passenger in the car, prompting all the township’s emergency personnel including a dive team to arrive at the scene.
Sgt. Marylouise Dranchak, who was at the scene, said the car was submerged by the time the dive team arrived.
However, a search revealed there were no passengers. Sgt. Dranchak said Mr. Page had been confused and disoriented and later corrected himself, citing that there had been no passengers with him.
Mr. Page did not suffer any injuries from the accident.
They were not certain, but police said there was a good chance the car was totaled. Sgt. Dranchak estimated the cleanup was mostly complete around 1 a.m. and that she had left around 2 a.m.
Mr. Page was charged with driving while intoxicated and received a summons for reckless driving.
