HILLSBOROUGH: Heat team halfway through Cooperstown (N.Y.) tournament

Monday night’s game interrupted by rain

The Hillsborough Heat 12-and-under baseball team has posted a 1-2 record after three games in the Cooperstown (N.Y.) Dreams Park.
The fourth game, which was against the Missouri Crushers, was suspended Monday due to rain. The Heat, who were the home team, led, 2-1, heading to the bottom of the second inning when rainstorms hit that ended play for the evening.
The Heat were scheduled to resume the game at 8 a.m. Tuesday. If the weather cooperates, they will conclude “pool play” with games against the Upper St. Clair Panthers (Pa.) and Hopedale Blue Raiders (Mass.) later in the day.
The Heat beat the Long Beach Nationals, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon behind complete-game pitching by Andrew Lagerman. They then lost to a strong Kentucky Bucs team, 10-4. The Heat kept the game close until the late innings.
The Heat then lost, 15-7, to the Brookfield Bulldogs. Again, some excellent fielding and timely hitting kept the game close until the late innings.
As of Monday night, the Heat were seeded 50th of the 104 teams. Once all games are completed Tuesday night, final seedings will be set for the playoffs, which begin Wednesday.
All teams were to play 6 games between Sunday and Tuesday.
