EDISON — A Middlesex County grand jury indicted an Edison man Aug. 1 in the murder of a 21-year-old woman and the attempted murder of a 28-year-old man in New Brunswick last October.

Darryll Underwood, 19, was charged Nov. 15 with fatally shooting Jessica Torres, 21, of North Brunswick, and wounding the unidentified man. Underwood was also charged with possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose and possession of an illegal handgun. Bail was set at $1.5 million.

Underwood allegedly targeted the 28- year-old man, and shot him and Torres as they stood outside the Progressive Masonic Temple on Hale Street in New Brunswick on Oct. 6, according to the results of an investigation by Detective Ronoldy Martinez of the New Brunswick Police Department and Investigator Michael Daniewicz of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

The shooting occurred shortly before 2:13 a.m., and police arrived to find the victims wounded. Torres was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where she was pronounced dead.

The 28-year-old man, identified as an acquaintance of Torres, also was taken to the hospital and was treated for multiple gunshot wounds.

Underwood has been housed at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center in North Brunswick since Oct. 16, when he was charged with shooting and wounding a 21-year-old New Brunswick man in an unrelated incident on Easton Avenue in New Brunswick on Sept. 22.
