SOUTH BRUNSWICK: JV soccer team wins third GMC tourney title

The 2013 South Brunswick Vikings JV Girls Soccer team celebrated its third straight JV GMC Tournament Championship Monday.
The 2013 South Brunswick Vikings JV Girls Soccer team celebrated its third straight JV GMC Tournament Championship Monday.
The Lady Vikings previously shared the title with East Brunswick in 2011 after a 1-1 tie and last year in a game that was cancelled due to Superstorm Sandy.
This year, however, the title was won outright 1-0 on Monday.
The game-winning goal was scored in the first half by Samia Baig off of Emily Lorber’s free kick.
The Viking defense of Sam Rivera, Mikala Valosin, Kiran Borkar, Emily Lorber, Julia Previte, and Goalkeeper Kate Mastro made it the only goal the Vikes needed as they shutout the Lady Bears the rest of the way.
The girls have played very well all-season, compiling an 8-3-3 regular season record, according to the coaching staff.
Every JV player scored at least 1 goal and the team allowed only 7 goals all season.
In the tournament run, the team’s record was 4-0 with 15 goals scored and none allowed, while avenging regular season losses against East Brunswick and Old Bridge as well as an earlier tie against Sayreville.
The team was led all season by their 4 Captains: Kiran Borkar, Sam Disario, Julia Previte and Brianna Spence who kept the girls together and motivated through a long season.
They weathered the loss of last years leading scorer Casey Baylis to a concussion before the season even started, as well as starting goalkeeper, Brianna Spence, to a season ending hand injury. Captain Julia Previte lost a week to an ankle injury suffered against East Brunswick and was anxious to make sure the team won against them when it mattered.
Other players lost significant time due to concussions and stress fractures.
Through it all, the girls rallied around each other and stepped up to do whatever the team needed in order to succeed.
The JV team also received a boost from several talented freshmen: Brielle Eder, Adrianna Mouzakis, Samia Baig, Rachel Hecht, Kate Mastro, and Sam Rivera who will look to make an impact in the program next year.
”I could not be any prouder of the way this team came together this year,” said Coach William Smith. “We are blessed at South Brunswick with talented players who are supported by their families and it shows in their character. These players know what it takes to win and are willing to put in the time and effort necessary for success.”
She said the coaching staff at South Brunswick, starting with the varsity team under Coach Beth Barrio and Assistant Coach Collin Boucher, all the way down to the freshmen team under Coach Tricia Quigley, demands a level of commitment from the girls in order to build a winning program.
”Today this group of girls got to see their hard work pay off in the championship. I hope that it is something they will remember for the rest of their lives,” said Coach Smith.
