EATONTOWN — Republicans regained a majority on the Eatontown Borough Council, winning both seats up for election on Nov. 5, according to unofficial results from Monmouth County.

Former Republican councilman Kevin Gonzalez garnered 1,635 votes alongside running mate Richard Robinson, who received 1,616 of the 5,721 votes cast.

They defeated Democrat incumbents Jennifer Piazza and Meir Araman who received 1,289 and 1,179 votes, respectively.

The Republican win shifts the political makeup of the council from a 5-2 Democratic majority that includes Mayor Gerald Tarantolo, to a 4-3 Republican majority.

Democrats gained majority of the council in the 2012 election. Previously, the council was evenly split with three Republicans and three Democrats. Tarantolo would vote in the case of a tie.

Results are unofficial until certified by the Monmouth County Board of Elections.

The Republicans celebrated their victory at Ruffino’s Pizza where family and friends gathered.

“I am thankful that we won,” Gonzalez said.

“There are a lot of things to do and I am anxious to get myself up to speed come January and then hit things full force.”
