The historic estate Tusculum sold for $5.5 million at an auction Thursday, the real estate auction company said.
Concierge Auctions would not disclose the name of the winning bidder for the property located on Cherry Hill Road.
The house, dating to the 18th century, once was the home of the Rev. John Witherspoon, a Founding Father, signer of the Declaration of Independence and president of Princeton University.
Current owners Tom and Avril Moore decided to sell the property, which had been on the market for six years. They had invested to restore the home.
The property had consisted of 83 acres, but a large chunk of that was sold to Princeton Township for open space preservation.
Today, the house sits on 23 acres.
