HILLSBOROUGH: Kids can compete Saturday in free-throw shooting

It’s the annual Elks contest

The Manville-Hillsborough Elks will sponsor its 42nd annual free throw shooting contest at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, in the gymnasium of Weston Elementary School, 600 Newark Ave., Manville.
The event is free of charge. If the participant is successful enough to move through state and regional finals, the local Elks will pay his or her way, including family, to the national finals in April.
The local level of the national free throw shooting contest is for youngsters age 8 through 13. Age is determined as of April 1, 2013.
More than three million youngsters from throughout the country entered last year’s competition for boys and girls in age categories 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Each contestant has 25 shots at the hoop. The boy and girl in each age group with the best scores advance through four tiers of competition to qualify for the national finals at the National Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Local winners will compete in the district event in Bound Brook in early January. District winners advance to the state finals in February at South Plainfield High School.
