St. Matthew School wins competition

EDISON — The township’s St. Matthew School reigned victorious among 13 other Diocese of Metuchen grammar schools in the 15th annual Bishop George Ahr (BGA) Grammar School Competition Nov. 4.

“Each school had such great spirit,” Sister Cynthia Babyak of BGA High School said. “It was a pleasure having them come to BGA. We look forward to hosting this event again next year.”

The high school’s Select Choir kicked off the competitive evening with some musical numbers, and the cheerleaders offered a performance to attendees.

The event’s contests were broken into five areas: a small-scale version of the TV game show “Jeopardy,” problem-solving activities, a dramatic-arts project, athletic activities and a spelling bee.

Schools were awarded first-, secondand third-place prizes in each category, and the schools that excelled across the board won overall awards.

St. Matthew took the top-ranking trophy, with St. John Vianney School in Colonia placing second overall and Old Bridge’s St. Ambrose School taking third place.
