HILLSBOROUGH: Baseball clinic to aid coach Zacheru

High school coaches will lead benefit for ill booster

Hillsborough High School baseball coach Norm Hewitt and his staff will conduct a baseball clinic Jan. 4 and 11 to raise funds for Gary Zacheru, a longtime volunteer and coach for the Hillsborough Baseball League and Hillsborough High School baseball programs.
Zacheru has been diagnosed with ALS. Because of mounting bills for treatment, the Hillsborough Diamond Club in conjunction with Coach Hewitt’s “Touching All the Bases” baseball camps wants to make a donation to help defray some expenses for the supporter of Hillsborough baseball.
”Baseball for Gary Zackeru” will be held from 1:30-4 p.m. in the Hillsborough Middle School gymnasium.
Hewitt, an eight-time coach of the year and Hall of Famer, will be joined by coaches Eric Eden, Steve Barrett, Rob Kumbatovic of Hofstra University and Ryan Kane of Kean University and a Montgomery High School varsity assistant.
There is no cost for the clinic, but donations will be accepted. This clinic is offered to coaches and players below the high school level.
The topics on Jan. 4 will be fielding, throwing, hitting techniques, mechanics, drills and on-the-floor participation. Players will be shown how to improve speed, agility, range, power and consistency with contact. Learn the secrets of a faster double play with fewer errors and how to hit with more power and a higher batting average.
On Jan. 11 hitting instruction will continue, if necessary. Also scheduled are pitching and catching techniques, mechanics, avoiding arm injuries, strength training, drills, velocity, location and ball movement, aspects of different pitches, holding runners and the mental approach to a more effective result.
