Program has ‘vested interest’ in K-9 dogs

NEWARK — The Associated Humane Societies (AHS) is seeking to outfit K-9 dogs in protective vests within existing and forming units in New Jersey’s police departments.

AHS is also looking for departments that may have previously received body armor for which the warranty is now expired.

Since 1997, the Vested Interest program has been providing vests to K-9 units. More than 1,800 vests have been purchased and distributed.

AHS purchases bullet- and stab-resistant combination vests at a cost of $825. The vest manufacturer is International Armor of California.

K-9 units interested in protective armor for service dogs should contact AHS at 973- 824-7080 or www.ahscares.org.

Donations to the vest program can be made at www.ahscares.org or mailed to Vested Interest Fund, 124 Evergreen Ave., Newark, NJ 07114.
