ROBBINSVILLE — Township Robbinsville fire officials recently announced Opticom, a traffic priority system for emergency vehicles, is now operational at two dangerous intersections of Route 130 — the Robbinsville Bypass Road and Robbinsville Allentown Road.
Manufactured by Global Traffic Technologies, Opticom allows priority right of way to any emergency vehicle equipped with an Opticom emitter.
The system, a project initiated by Washington Volunteer Firemen member Robert Thomson, comes to Robbinsville after several years of engineering studies, along with state, local and county approvals.Opticom works by syncing with the traffic signal via signal and cycling the signal to turn green, thus allowing the emergency vehicle to proceed through the intersection and avoid a more dangerous entry against a red signal.
According to the township website, the system will make for safer travel for fire department vehicles from Robbinsville and Hamilton Township as they enter both intersections.
Fundraising efforts by the Washington Volunteer Firemen paid for the system, which cost approximately $20,000 to install.
Equipment was purchased from Signal Controls and installed by Cray Electric. Currently, five fire department vehicles have Opticom Emitters on them with more scheduled to be added.
