Power back on for area residents

EDISON — As of Monday afternoon, the lights were back on for the thousands of PSE&G customers who lost power during portions of the past week-and-a-half in Edison and Highland Park, according to utility representatives.

An equipment failure at a PSE&G substation in Edison earlier this month first caused a wave of outages in the area, according to a statement from the company. Frigid temperatures then caused temporary repairs to fail on Jan. 21 and again on Jan. 22, affecting nearly 2,500 customers.

“Our crews have installed additional transformers, and they continue to install larger wires on poles outside the station to increase the capacity and flexibility of the two problematic circuits,” PSE&G spokesperson Kristine Lloyd said. “We are confident that these fixes will mitigate the sporadic outages that have affected the area and keep power flowing while we continue to work on permanent repairs in the station.”

As of last week, PSE&G officials estimated that it would take three weeks to fully repair the substation.

Individuals who live in the affected area — which PSE&G officials refused to name for security reasons — may call the utility at 800- 569-6189.

“We will continue to monitor the system closely and respond to any outages as quickly as possible,” Lloyd said. “We know that these outages are causing difficulty for our customers. We appreciate their continued patience as we work to fully repair the station.”
