Deadline approaching for Affordable Care Act

The enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) ends on March 31.

Also known as Obamacare, the ACA was signed into law in March 2010 and ratified by the Supreme Court in June 2012.

Benefits that must be included in one’s health plan through the ACA are doctor’s visits; emergency services; hospitalization; maternity and newborn care; mental health and substance abuse services, including behavioral health treatment, prescription drugs, and rehabilitative/habilitative services and devices; laboratory services; preventive and wellness services; chronic-disease management; and pediatric services, including oral and vision screening.

In many cases, a person may get preventive services for free, including cancer screenings such as mammograms and colonoscopies; vaccinations; cholesterol screenings; tobacco-cessation counseling and interventions; birth control; and depression screening.
