WEST WINDSOR: Police: Phone scammer threatens harm for money

WEST WINDSOR — Township police are warning area residents of a phone scam.
The West Windsor Township Police and surrounding agencies have been receiving reports of a phone scam originating from a local 609 area code phone number, according to Detective Jason Jones.
”The caller is an unknown male and speaks with a very heavy Spanish accent,” Detective Jones said. “He claims that he has one of your loved ones and attempts to extract additional information from you. He also has claimed that your loved one was involved in a car accident and has struck the caller’s brother who had a child in the car. The caller then threatens to shoot and kill your loved one if you do not send them money to a Western Union account.”
In all of the reported instances the person allegedly being threatened was found to be unharmed and not involved in any type of accident, according to police. In some cases, the male has called back multiple times asking for money and threatening to kill a loved one, according to police.
”Do not send money and contact your local police department should you receive one of these phone calls,” Detective Jones said.
