The Crosswicks Monthly Meeting has joined the reuse movement with ShoeBox Recycling and would like to thank everyone for their donations. They have already collected 19 boxes of shoes. It’s an amazing community service fundraising opportunity that lets you recycle your shoes, find your SoleMate. They are collecting shoes for reuse, spreading the message that worn is not worn out and hopefully connecting with people around the globe through the magic of a SoleMate note. Just like the old message in a bottle, only now the vessel is your shoes that you know longer wear. People all over the globe depend on second hand shoes so they can attend school, to protect against bacteria borne illnesses, for self-esteem, for job creation. ShoeBox Recycling will send boxes to fill, pay for all shipping costs and the tools for a successful shoe drive and the chance to meet a SoleMate and they pay 50 cents per pound for good, reusable and re-wearable shoes that are collected. This collection will help the meeting to earn a little money while clearing out closets and sharing with those in need. There are collection boxes in the meeting house and First Day School on Front Street in Crosswicks. For more information, call 609-298-5616.

Chesterfield Township announces its "Grass: Cut It and Leave It Recycling Campaign." The amount of solid waste generated in New Jersey increases annually, and the waste stream continues to grow faster than the state’s ability to recycle it. Recycling is only part of the solution; waste reduction is also important. One small way to help is to reduce waste created by grass clippings. Simply, don’t bag the grass clippings, recycle them by leaving them on the lawn using the mulching feature. Clippings have lots of nutrients that contribute to soil organic matter and supply part of the fertilizer needs of the lawn. Concerned about thatch? Thatch is primarily caused by a dense accumulation of grass roots and stem material rather than clippings. Adopt a mowing schedule to keep clippings short enough (removing only 1/3 of the grass length during mowing) to filter through growing grass and not remain as a mat on top of the lawn. Also, fertilizing and watering above the requirements of the grass may be more detrimental than beneficial to a lawn, causing increased production of clippings and potential ground or surface water pollution. Judicious use of fertilizer and water can provide an attractive lawn with a reduction in the costs, effort, susceptibility to disease, and amount of clippings produced.
